You may have noticed that we didn't run a vote for this month's release. We had a couple animals we've been hiding up our sleeves and we figured this would be a good month to release them. Next month we'll return the vote just in time for you to practice for that other voting thing.
And now, presenting:
The White Rabbit!
The Lady Rabbit!
The Mouse Couple!
***PLUS BONUS ITEMS***
New Sealife animal pack!
We're also experimenting with some larger scale prints so we're trying out a couple old favorites at 11x14".
Meet The Bigger Cheetah!
And The Bigger Shark! (Featured with headless husband artist).
Obviously I am bit delirious from a day in front of the computer and I'm assigning exclamation points haphazard!ly. Or perhaps I am just TOTALLY PSYCHED!!¡¡¡!!!
The votes were tallied and it came down to one little teeny vote for this month. By just a smidge, the Dinosaur has finally proved victorious! And guess what? He's already up in the Etsy shop!
He got the extra special wardrobe treatment. Love the ascot!
He is joined by the classic and classy Robin:
and the Puss Moth (gross) Caterpillar! This one is so crazy looking it just seems like it could be totally fake:
I like how he didn't back away from a colorful jacket despite the fact that he is already blasting color from his head. A bold man!
During the one day when Ryan wasn't drawing this weekend we snuck up to Mt. Hood for a retreat in a cabin with some friends. I get really panicked about driving in the snow/ice so it was nice to get up to the high elevation before the bad weather comes.
This is as close as we've ever gotten to a ski lift, too. It was obviously very exciting, even if it was just on the porch outside of a diner.
The cabin felt just like home, too, when we saw that a squirrel would be living with us for the day:
It looks like he hasn't put on his suit yet, though.
Friends, let me tell you about a little place called Tacoma, Washington. For those of you non-Pacific Northwesterns, Tacoma is just south of Seattle on Interstate 5. We have driven by this town about 500 times en route to Seattle and it is known to many as "Tacoma Aroma"...perhaps you can guess why. (Hint, it's not for a cookie factory). You drive right past it's giant blue dome (currently advertising for a Fall RV show and the So You Think You Can Dance tour) when cruising from Portland to Seattle and usually you don't have reason to stop.
This weekend, however, we had reason to stop. And we were impressed! We escaped the house and had the privilege of meeting up with one of my oldest friends and her family who I only get to see every few years at most. We doubled the trip with some animal field research at the Port Defiance Zoo and Ryan nearly fainted when he found out we were going to get to see a shark feeding.
Perhaps the best part of the trip was when we first met up with the awesome Gessner family and found them all wearing handmade Berkley Illustration shirts! How cool are they?
(Er, but please only do this if you're friends with us.)
We're even thinking of using the kids in a new ad campaign because they're so flippin cute!
Naturally, the six of us found no shortage of new animals that Ryan needs to draw! We met up with a few animal friends that Ryan has already illustrated as well.
Here is a bit more recap of a day at the zoo:
And here's a little bit o' Tacoma:
And finally, we took the long way home and got to see the beach. The long way home can always make me happy.
So, remember that Dome I mentioned at the beginning? Well, surprise bonus! Ryan totally rocked it!
Thanks to the Gessners for showing us such a good time and getting us to Tacoma! The Gessners rock!
P.S. I hope we didn't offend any Tacomaians. And if we did, hopefully you've forgiven us by the end of the post. ♥
YYYEEEOOOWWW!!! Here we go again- you want 'em? I draw 'em!
Today through Friday (July 25th) we'll be accepting votes for one of the new animals to be released in the Berkley Illustration August line, along with two other finished lovelies waiting to see the light.
To vote, just leave a comment after this post with the animal you've been needing to see in some proper attire. On Saturday we'll tally up the top three and have a vote-off!
If your animal didn't make the cut last time, vote for it again and tell a friend! There were definitely some GREAT animals last time that I was pretty excited to draw, had they won.
A few notes (I believe they might also call this the "fine print"): Berkley Illustration reserves the right to make the ultimate final decision. I will try my best to accommodate the winning vote but sometimes there are things that might be more difficult to fit in depending on sizing and detail.
We also ask nicely not to submit specific dog and cat breeds. As much as we love all pets, doing breed specific art would likely create a buzz that I am a "pet portrait artist" (which I have nothing against - it's just not my specific focus) and would unfortunately cause me to turn down an even larger flood of pet requests due to my lack of time for commissions these days. Thank you for understanding.
Berkley Illustration has teamed up with a couple of your favorite indie accessory providers and all kinds of animals are available now for your pocketbook needs.
Tinymeat has released three wallets in the goat, owl, and squirrel flavors (more to come!):
My Favorite Mirror just started carrying keychains and pocket mirrors in a whole slew of your favorite animals:
Lastly, though not accessory related, Reading Frenzy has animal originals up for sale through the end of the month which includes the new turtle with a fez, Melvin Plum!
Melvin and the rest of the animals are all framed in a pretty spiffy manner, if we do say so ourselves. Unfortunately we don't have great photos of the framed finals (yet) but here the general idea of what look like:
And, yes, Melvin will be finding his way to the Etsy print circuit. Bear in mind that he is a turtle so it could take him a while to get there. We'll try to speed him along as best we can. Perhaps if we buy him a tiny car to go with that hat...
He is joined by his good buddies, the brown bat and the eye-patched cheetah.
We're busy busy busy preparing for Renegade. I can't believe we fly to New York next week! We haven't even been thinking about the actual New York vacation part yet...if anyone knows of anything tremendous happening in the next couple weeks in the Big Apple, please let us know! We found out our Renegade booth will be next to our travelling buddy, Bossanova Baby so if any of you Brooklynites are looking for a good time, you should definitely come visit our little corner of the Renegade world.
Ryan is working on some exclusive originals for the show and we're hoping to preview a couple of the upcoming July prints there as well. There are sooo many awesome vendors participating. I hope we have time to wander and score some good loot.
Big thanks to my mom for working on our new display system which I think will work out perfectly. Our previous display system would have been tough to haul across the country and this one should be very travel-worthy. Of course we'll have photos when everything is said and done.
Wow! Thanks to everyone for voting in our first animal election! We're down to the final three candidates so please leave a comment with your favorite from these three:
Voting will close at midnight (West Coast time) on Monday, May 26th. The animal with the most votes will be included in our early June animal releases!
We received votes for 48 different animals and there were lots of intriguing choices. Several were already in our "to-do" pile so some might end up in the line-up down the road and we also hope to make the voting a regular thing so please check back if your animal didn't make it in this cut!
