We've had our heads down for the last couple weeks planning, plotting, and drawing (well, one of us was drawing -- try to guess which one) and now the results are almost ready for the world.
We installed most of Ryan's newest show, "What You're Into" at Land Gallery in Portland last night.
<Erin> 1. John Wayne. 2. Bears. 3. Pogo Sticks
The concept of the show was to interview friends and ask them to rank the top three things they're 'into' right now. Ryan then interpreted their choices as medal winners in some kind of strange mental Olympics. (Side note: when we came up with the concept for the show, the Olympics hadn't started and we hadn't even really thought about the fact they'd be occurring around the same time. I think we just really like awards.)We were hoping to gain a few insights from the work:
1. Seeing what our friends have going on upstairs right now and hopefully learn a little more about them because of it.
2. Discover what kinds of things our friends have in common with each other and with us and with the whole wide world.
3. See how people's interests change or take on a different tone when on paper versus in their heads.
<Zach> 1. REFRIGERATORS. 2. HAWKS. 3. DONUTS
Ryan's hoping to continue the series seeing as how he was only able to complete 17 out of over 50 choices. Although, at 17 pieces, I think this is the largest show Ryan has ever put out at once.Oh yes. And lest you were worried we played any kind of favorites, I presented all the choices to Ryan without a name attached. He didn't know who the choices belonged to until the drawings were complete.
<Emily> 1. Pineapples. 2. Painkillers. 3. Permafrost
If you are in Portland, please come on out to the opening tomorrow from 6-8pm! We have a few more surprises in store for the gallery space itself. Land is at 3925 N. Mississippi and, if I haven't mentioned it, it's run by the wonder people of Buy Olympia. If you can't make it, we'll have photos of the opening and the rest of the pieces for you to see via the internets soon.
